Half-Day K vs. Full-Day K – Discussion on Jan 25th @ District Offices

Kindergarten.  When is the best time to start?  By policy you can enroll your child if they are 5 years of age on or before September 1st, but you can get a provisional approval if your child is 5 years old before December 31 of the same year.

For decades Kindergarten has been a transitory period into the public school system.  As such, it focused on students in attendance for half a day in order that they can get a taste for what is to come the following year and set the foundation for learning.  Recent changes in society with more and more second income families has left a problem that is more easily solved by instituting all-day Kindergarten.  Many studies have been conducted that conveniently report an increased capability in students that take advantage of the all-day program.  Yet studies done more recently have challenged those claims and shown that any advantages have been neutralized by the 5th and 6th grade as other studends “catch up”.

Whatever your personal decision on the matter is, you may wish to have your position heard by the school board as this has been rumored to be the discussion for the working session when considering the budget.  The meeting is this Tuesday, Jan 25, 2011.  The meeting is at the district offices which are located at 140 S. Gilbert Rd, Gilbert, AZ.
